About us

The Narratives of Culture and Identity Research Group addresses young researchers (PhD students, PhD candidates and postdocs) who focus on contemporary issues, and invites them to a truly democratic forum of research. The group serves to promote discussion among different academic disciplines, and aims to provide a framework for dialogue. We strongly believe that interdisciplinary thinking boosts and supports individual research. Research areas include but are not limited to: aesthetics, anthropology, cognitive studies, comics, film, game studies, gender, history, literature, memory studies, popular culture, sociology, visual culture.

The group was founded in 2014 by Kata Gyuris and Eszter Szep, doctoral candidates at ELTE. Currently we have eleven members, coming from five universities. Group members take part in workshops and meetings, where we can discuss upcoming projects, new ideas, and deeply existential questions. Group members decide collectively on our direction of research. Administration, co-ordination and social media are managed by Eszter and Kata; our academic advisor is Judit Friedrich, ELTE.

Our immediate and long-term goals are:

  • to provide a framework for research and feedback for young researchers
  • to contribute to the dialogue between foreign language and Hungarian studies of contemporary culture
  • to organise interdisciplinary and international academic events

Our previous and ongoing projects:

  • Fall 2017: Series of public lectures at Pesti Bölcsész Akadémia. Details here.
  • Dec 2017: planned publication of the edited collection Turning The Page. Gendered Identities in Contemporary Literary and Visual Cultures.
  • 2016: “Introducing Young Philologists” – issue of Filológiai Közlöny, a Hungarian literary journal, devoted to our essays on questions of identity in contemporary British and American literature. Link.
  • 5-6 June 2015: Gendered Identities in Contemporary Literary and Visual Cultures conference at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Please see details here.

About our meetings:

Our individual research as well as projects as a group are based on our regular meetings, where we present our topics and occasionally invite guest speakers. New members are invited to present their topic at the first meeting after their admission. The meetings take place in Budapest.

We are very grateful for

our wonderful mentor, Judit Friedrich (Eötvös Loránd University) and our guests: Tamás Dunai (University of Debrecen) , Ágnes Kovács (University of Szeged), Gábor Tamás Molnár (Eötvös Loránd University), Győző Ferencz (Eötvös Loránd University).
